Welcome to Seasource , the Web companion to the Self-Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference.

The annual Self Employment in the Arts Conference is funded by the Coleman Foundation and conducted by North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. The SEA Conference joins students and other aspiring artists with working artists, educators, and arts-business professionals. Interactive panels provide practical lessons about structuring a career, marketing, legal issues, and accounting.

The Seasource site works as the online extension of the SEA Conference. Here, you'll find three kinds of online resources:

  • Topic-based Web resources that focus on the career and business issues artists face. Some flow from SEA Conference participants. Others are culled from Web sites around the country. These links go straight to specific pages, rather than home pages.

  • Featured artists, real-world stories that offer proof that there is life after art school, not to mention practical information that you may be able to use to build your own career. We'll be adding and archiving continually. And we invite you share your own successes, and recommend others for profiles.

  • Top-level links to other arts or business portals we've found. These include broad, comprehensive sites as well as resources that target particular areas of the arts.

We've looked at every site we link to. That doesn't mean there aren't pages and sites as good or better, just that we haven't run across them yet. If you regularly use or come across a useful site or page, we hope you'll send it to us--just click the "Contact Us" link at the top of any page. We'll review it and add it.

Some linked-to sites are produced by non-profit organizations and government agencies. Others are dot.com, as in commercial. We don't endorse any for-free service or product in those cases. Their presence means only they're worth a look.

Whether you're an art student, an arts faculty member, or want to pursue your artistic passion as a sideline or new career, the site offers the business and career information you need.
