Joe Dillett is owner and operator of The Carving Shop in Somonauk Illinois. He has over 32-years experience using traditional Old World tools to produce his works of art. He has been teaching this traditional art form for about 28-years. He specializes in custom artwork for the architectural industry specifically artwork for lobbies, entryway doors, mantels, corbels, statues, and altars. Because of his extensive backlog his typical lead-time for a custom mantel, showing the family history, is 5-years. He attributes the strength of his business to marketing, customer communication and quality of work (in that order).
As a full-time artist, Joe is dedicated to promoting fine arts. He serves on the board of directors for The Art Attack, School of Fine Arts in Sycamore. He is on the staff and writes the "Ask Joe" column for Carving Magazine, an international magazine published by All American Crafts. He has also written 3 marketing articles for this same magazine over the past year. He is a member of the National Woodcarvers Association and Vice President of the carving club in DeKalb.
Session 1: Business Plan (The What, When, Why and How about our Business)
Joe will be speaking on the Business Plan. He will discuss the need to have a plan and why the plan should be followed. As a successful business owner for many years, he will talk about the mistakes he made and how it cost him by not having a realistic business plan last year.
